Yesterday was the perfect day for a laid back hike. The only kind of hike we can do with Jethro and Micah. Off we go to Koeberg Nature Reserve, the home of Eskom... Our very efficient electricity supplier in the beautiful South Africa... And if you believe that, then you are obviously not from South Africa.

Powerlines and Table Mountain |
The nice thing about this nature reserve is that it actually contains a bit of small game - bokkies, zebra, duiker, etc. We've never done a hike there and wanted something not too tough in order for the kids to participate. They have a shortish ciruclar route of about 6km's which takes you through some fynbos covered dunes, then past the sea and then back through some more fynbos forests. This is called the Grysbok trail. They also have a longer trail of 9.5 to 23km's trail (Dikkop trail). And for the mountain bike enthusiasts a 19km mountain bike trail. We wisely chose the Grysbok trail!
This route took us about 3hrs to do. This includes our stop time which came to about 55 minutes. We stopped twice for the kiddies, yes, for the kiddies :) The first stop was 15 minutes and the second stop was probably about 30 minutes, which we enjoyed on a platform on stilts looking over the ocean - very peaceful.

Have a break... |
We could not have asked for a better day! It was overcast and cool, but not cold. NO WIND!! Bonus! And Jethro did so well! He practically walked 5km's of the 6km's. The last kilometer was spent on Daddy's shoulders. Micah came along in the back pack and made Zebra noises every time he saw a bird. He is so in love with birds - it could be a pigeon or a flamingo. He loves them all.

There was a lot of animal droppings along the way but we only managed to see a herd of springbuck as we neared the end of the hike. But wow, they are sooo beautiful. Micah starting making his Zebra sound again! Which means, please acknowledge that you are seeing what I'm seeing. And we have to respond with Ooh and Aah and Wow. Then he is very happy.
If you have young kids, this is a great hike or rather walk. Not the most beautiful but a good starter trail. Just remember to take lots of breaks, water and snacks to keep them happy!
